CMS changes Feb. 21 back to a teacher workday, school district says

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will change Monday, Feb. 21, back to a teacher workday as it was originally scheduled, the district announced Monday.

The district closed schools on Tuesday, Jan. 18, after Winter Storm Izzy hit the Charlotte area with a wintry mix of weather the previous weekend. Feb. 21 was to be the makeup date.

Monday’s reversal gives the district flexibility if more severe weather happens before the end of the school year, according to a CMS news release.

However, in a message to CMS families Monday, the district said the decision came after “a large number” of staff committed to state-mandated professional development.

CMS leaders considered a number of options to make up the school day, but decided on not releasing high school students early on spring exam days because it allows for an additional five hours of instruction time, the district said.

The remaining three hours will be made up on May 4, which is now a regular school day and not an early release day as previously scheduled, the district said.

CMS has three districtwide emergency days remaining.
