City Council approves $4.2 million contract for new bodycams, stun guns to CMPD

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers will get upgraded body-worn cameras, stun guns under a new contract unanimously approved by the City Council on Monday night.

The five-year, $4.2 million contract with Axon Enterprise Inc. will provide CMPD with replacements for about 3,500 cameras, according to the city. About 1,750 stun guns, or tasers, will be replaced.

Technical support for CMPD’s current tasers will end in fiscal year 2023, according to the city. The contract allows for tasers to be replaced in an optional sixth year at no additional cost.

The contract will replace CMPD’s body worn cameras and docks over the five-year period. Newer versions of the cameras have better video, audio and software services.

The contract can be renewed for up to five, one-year terms, with possible price adjustments, according to the city.

In North Carolina, police body-worn camera footage is not a public record and cannot be released to the public without a court order.

In December, the City Council voted to authorize the purchase of less-lethal crushable foam rounds, the Observer previously reported.
