Beer festival raises more than $27,000 for family of fallen CMPD Officer Mia Goodwin

A craft beer festival last weekend raised over $27,000 for the family of fallen Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Mia Goodwin, but donations continue to come in, Salute to Heroes Charlotte Foundation said Wednesday.

Goodwin, 33, was killed while on duty in December after two semi-trucks collided on Interstate 85 and hit her cruiser. Goodwin and three other officers were working an earlier accident in the area when the wreck happened. She is survived by her firefighter husband, Brenton Goodwin, and three young children, including an infant.

The nonprofit Salute to Heroes helps public safety workers during times of need. More than 20 Charlotte-area breweries participated in “Craft Brewers for a Cause” at Suffolk Punch in South End on Saturday.

Ticket-holders received unlimited beer samplings and food, and a commemorative festival glass.

Anyone wishing to donate can still do so through the foundation.

More than $340,000 have been donated to the Goodwin family through two different GoFundMe pages.

In January, a New York-based foundation paid the Goodwin family’s mortgage. the Tunnel to Towers Foundation is a nonprofit created in honor of New York firefighter Stephen Siller, who died during the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.
