Google Maps outages are being reported worldwide. Use these alternatives to get around

GPS-dependent drivers beware: Google Maps is reportedly down for many users across the world.

Outage reports began to spike about 11 a.m. Friday, according to the outage tracker Downdetector. As of 1 p.m., more than 12,000 users had reported issues with the navigation service. Google has not publicly commented on the outage.

Many were taking to social media to express their frustration with the outage, citing their reliance on the service to get around town.

“Google maps is down and it’s really messing with me. I check google maps all the time to see what entrances and roads and parking situations look like,” one Twitter user wrote.

If you still need directions to get to your destination, there are other options.

Google Maps alternatives

  • Apple Maps is available to those with an Apple device, such as an iPhone. It provides similar step-by-step directions to the Google Maps app.
  • Waze is an app available for download on Apple and Android devices that provides live navigation for drivers.
  • The website MapQuest, a road trip staple of years past, is still active. You can use it to get step-by-step directions that you can print out or screenshot on your device.
  • If you’ve got paper maps lying around, you can always pull them out before hitting the road.
