CMPD charges Charlotte man who police shot at, accused of trying to run over an officer

A Charlotte man who a police officer shot at, saying the man had tried to run him over, has been arrested five weeks later.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police on March 9 said the shooting happened as the driver of a car they believed was stolen tried to get away — and in doing so “the driver tried to run over one officer,” who fired at the driver in the fleeing car. It happened at a hotel on Nations Ford Road.

The department has been investigating the shooting as an assault on police but not an officer-involved shooting, explaining previously that the N.C. State Bureau of Investigations wouldn’t be called in because the officer who fired his gun did not injure anyone. The day after the shooting, police said they found the car — a gray Ford Fusion — that the driver fled in, which had been reported stolen off Farmhurst Drive.

Late Friday, CMPD officials said officers have charged Carneal Robinson of Charlotte, 34, with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and possession of a stolen vehicle. He’d been arrested Tuesday, according to CMPD. Jail records show he’s being held at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center on a $30,000 bond.

Police are not saying what evidence led them to arrest Robinson in the case.

No injuries were reported.

On the day of the shooting, CMPD officials said another person was in the car but got out and left before the driver took off.
