Orange barrels alert: Road work is coming to these major Charlotte-area roads

Several major roads in Mecklenburg County will undergo resurfacing and other improvements as part of a $2.6 million contract awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation this week.

These sections of roads will be improved, with work possibly starting as early as June 6 and finishing by October 2023, NCDOT officials said in a news release Thursday:

Freedom Drive in Charlotte, between Mount Holly Road and Lundy Lane and from Edgewood Road/Bradford Drive to Interstate 85

Statesville Avenue between Interstate 85 and Graham Street in Charlotte. Camp North End, the 76-acre dining, retail, public art and events complex lies along that stretch.

John Russell Road from Back Creek Church Road to McLean Road in northeast Charlotte.

West John Street between Greylock Ridge Road and N.C. 51 (Matthews Township Parkway) in Matthews.

In all, 7.6 miles of Mecklenburg County roads will be improved, officials said.

Work will include removing deteriorated asphalt and resurfacing the stretches with new asphalt. Crews also will rebuild shoulders of the roads and install pavement markings and markers.

The contract doesn’t specify when work is expected to start and finish on individual roads, Jennifer Thompson, NCDOT spokeswoman for the Charlotte area, told The Charlotte Observer on Friday.

NCDOT doesn’t have a schedule yet from the contractor and hasn’t held a pre-construction meeting where such a timetable would be discussed, Thompson said.

Roads will be resurfaced at night except for John Russell Road, where closures will be permitted between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., she said.
