What Stephen Curry, Davidson alums said on social media about Bob McKillop’s retirement
Newly-minted NBA champion Stephen Curry was among many former Davidson College players who reacted to the news that longtime coach Bob McKillop was retiring.
McKillop, 71, announced his retirement at a Friday news conference that was originally billed as a Curry jersey retirement ceremony.
While Curry’s number will be retired, the McKillop news quickly usurped it.
“Love you coach!” Curry tweeted. “Thank you for everything you’ve done for me, my family, Davidson and every person you’ve impacted along the way.”
Tom Droney, who played for McKillop from 2010-2013, said he got a “PhD in basketball and life” from his former coach.
Former Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx, a Davidson graduate, and North Carolina Rep. Alma Adams also paid tribute to McKillop.
“Congratulations to Davidson Basketball Head Coach Bob McKillop on an incredible career and a life of service to our community,” Adams tweeted.
“Bob McKillop resurrected our program and done it the right way. I wish we could have him for 33 more years but he’s earned the right — excited for what he will do in his next phase, excited for Matt McKillop to step in, excited to see @StephenCurry30 jersey retired.”
McKillop will be succeeded by his son, assistant coach Matt McKillop.
