Charlotte’s Department of Transportation is asking the public for help naming its latest employee: a bike lane sweeper

There’s a new machine in town, and its name is... not yet decided.

A bike lane sweeper has hit Charlotte’s streets, and the city’s Department of Transportation is asking the public for help naming it.

The sweeper clears debris from Charlotte’s bike lanes, which are out of the larger street sweepers’ reach.

Wordsmiths can submit name suggestions on the campaign’s portal. Its “Name the Sweeper” tab prompts visitors to suggest monikers via a submission box at the bottom of the page. People can also vote on which existing suggestions best fit the city’s newest investment.

As of noon Friday, Charlotteans had submitted names such as Brush Springsteen, Sweep Caroline, Cycleangelo, Clearopathra. Sweepy McSweepface currently tops the leaderboard.

The campaign’s suggestion portal will close May 14 and reopen May 20 for a final vote on finalists picked by staff.

The sweeper will be ceremoniously named at the city’s Bike After Work Social, held at the Innovation Barn on Seigle Avenue May 25 at 5:30 p.m.
