Gentrification in Charlotte

Gentrification has long taken place in historic Black Charlotte neighborhoods. One piece of that is through demolishing old homes. But residents say they now feel like outsiders.

The Charlotte Observer will present a community conversation illuminating a key topic of concern to residents.

Growth versus Gentrification: Stop or Embrace it? focuses on how historic Black neighborhoods, impacted by necessary growth around the city, are disappearing as gentrification takes hold.

Join us on Thursday, June 22, 6-7:30 p.m., at the Allegra Westbrooks Regional Library for an in-person conversation with a panel of community leaders, experts and those affected by the change to explore reasons for growth and how it shapes, affects, destroys or rebuilds communities.

Our panelists include Malcolm Graham, Charlotte City Council member, District 2; Boris Henderson, Aldersgate Living and Habitat for Humanity International Board Member; David Walters, Professor Emeritus of Architecture and Urban Design at UNC Charlotte; Quila Brunson, Real Estate broker, owner of Perfect House Group and a West Charlotte native; Ismaail Qaiyim, Esq.,Queen City Community Law Firm; Winston Robinson, Executive Director of Applesauce Group.
