Authorities Friday morning found the swimmer who went missing in Mountain Island Lake Wednesday afternoon.

Timothy McGrane’s body was about half a mile from where witnesses first reported him missing. The 30-year-old from Stephens City, Virginia, was last seen near Latta Nature Preserve’s North Kayak Access, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release.

His family has been notified of his death, authorities said.

Huntersville Fire Department helped search the lake, about 12 miles north of Charlotte and 10 miles south of Lake Norman, for about 36 hours.

The water divides Mecklenburg and Gaston counties, bordered by Cowans Ford Wildlife Refuge and Latta and Rural Hill Nature Preserves.
