A winter storm will cross the Charlotte region Wednesday, and it could bring a mix of snow and rain after dark, the National Weather Service says.

No significant accumulation is expected, but a low of 23 degrees could make for a treacherous Thursday morning commute.

There is a 90% chance of rain during the day Wednesday, followed by a 40% chance of snow and freezing rain after sunset and then just snow from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., forecasters say.

A high of 37 degrees on Thursday could help clear roads for the evening commute.

“Confidence is slowly increasing as to the timing of the precipitation across the area, but confidence remains low as to the precipitation type and amount,” the National Weather Service reports.

The uncertainty is based on how far south deep cold air will go during the storm, experts say. Some forecast models predict the cold will extend as far south as Interstate 85 while others put the line farther north along Interstate 40.

Temperatures will be below freezing after dark much of this week, with a low of 18 degrees predicted Thursday night.
