I-485 interchange to open as massive toll-lanes project nears completion
Beginning Friday morning, a key interchange is scheduled to open as the massive, long-running Interstate 485 toll lanes project nears completion, state highway officials said Thursday.
Drivers should be able to use the new Weddington Road interchange in Matthews by late morning, according to a North Carolina Department of Transportation news release.
“Contract crews will remove barricades and traffic control around 10 a.m., which could take up to an hour,” according to the news release.
$346 million project nearly open
The interchange is part of the $346 million toll lane project that will include a toll lane in each direction on I-485 between I-77 and Independence Boulevard (U.S. 74) and a free I-485 lane in each direction between Rea Road and Providence Road.
The overall project should open in late February, officials said this week. Some work will continue into spring before the project is finally complete, according to NCDOT.
Minor work also will continue near the Weddington Road interchange, including installing the traffic signal at Fincher Farm Road, officials said.
