Viral TikTok of teens dancing on car prompts new curfew at Birkdale Village
Birkdale Village in Huntersville is implementing a new 6 p.m. curfew for unaccompanied minors following what management described as “recent disturbances involving large groups.”
Birkdale Village is an upscale, open-air shopping, dining and residential development in Huntersville, about 20 miles north of Charlotte near Lake Norman that features national retailers, locally owned boutiques, restaurants, offices and luxury apartments.
The shopping center said an incident over the weekend required support from the Huntersville Police Department, WSOC reported.
A video shared on TikTok nearly 20,000 times shows minors surrounding a car and blocking traffic Saturday. The video appears to show several minors climbing onto the vehicle and briefly dancing on its roof before getting down and allowing the car to move forward.
Another video posted to TikTok on Sunday appears to show a large group of minors exiting the Chipotle at Birkdale Village as music plays in the background.
In response, Birkdale Village will also increase police presence on Friday and Saturday nights starting this weekend, WSOC reported.
The Huntersville Police Department did not respond to The Charlotte Observer’s request for comment by the time of publication.
History of curfews
This is not the first time Birkdale Village has enacted a curfew for minors.
According to its code of conduct, all visitors under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian after 8 p.m., and anyone under 21 is not permitted on the property after 10 p.m. The policy also states that juvenile groups of four or more will be dispersed.
The shopping center adopted a policy in 2017 prohibiting youth ages 13 to 15 from being on the property between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., The Charlotte Observer reported. Children 12 and younger were subject to a 10 p.m. curfew.
At the time, Birkdale Village pushed back on social media speculation that the policy was tied to rising crime, saying in a Facebook post that it was being proactive and increasing security during the busy summer months as more visitors were expected.
In November, the Huntersville Police Department said it would step up patrols around the shopping center in response to an uptick in incidents involving groups of young people, WCNC reported.
Similarly, in 2009, Northlake Mall in Charlotte near Huntersville implemented its own curfew policy, requiring anyone under 18 to be accompanied by an adult on Fridays and Saturdays after 5 p.m.
Do curfews work?
When Northlake Mall first rolled out its curfew, mall staff noticed a “significant drop” in crowds congregating during the first weekend, WBTV reported.
However, in later years, the mall continued to face violent incidents involving minors.
Christmas Eve shopping at the mall turned chaotic when gunfire erupted between two groups involved in an ongoing dispute, the Observer reported in 2015. Officers said at least two people pulled out guns and began shooting on the mall’s lower level near Dick’s Sporting Goods. An off-duty officer working at the mall shot and killed one of the alleged gunmen, who was a teen.
In 2021, a juvenile was charged with the attempted murder of another youth following a March 20 shooting inside the mall, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said at the time.
