York County man buys NC lottery ticket at Pineville Food Lion and wins jackpot

A York County man shopping in Pineville paid $1 for a Cash 5 lottery ticket and beat odds of 1 in 962,598 to hit the jackpot, according to the North Carolina Education Lottery.

Ronald Chiles of Fort Mill won $478,336 in the Tuesday drawing, lottery officials said in a March 26 news release.

He bought the ticket at the Food Lion on South Polk Street, and the winning numbers were 19, 21, 24, 39, 41, the game reports.

“He claimed his prize Thursday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required federal and state tax withholdings, Chiles took home $344,450,” lottery officials said.

Chiles didn’t reveal what he intends to do with the money.

Cash 5 is a drawing and players pick five numbers from 1 to 43, or they have the terminal pick for them. Lottery officials didn’t say if Chiles used his own numbers.

Fort Mill is just across of the South Carolina state line, about a 20-mile drive south from uptown Charlotte.
