Queens University swimmer killed in weekend car crash that injured two others

A 22-year-old Queens University swimmer died in car crash on early Sunday morning near campus, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

“Forever a royal,” said the university’s swim team on social media. “We honor the life of Keegan McKenney — a cherished teammate, friend, and member of the Queens family whose impact will never be forgotten.”

McKenney was in the passenger seat when the crash occurred at 2:15 a.m. in the 1400 block of Queens Road West, CMPD said in a news release.

The vehicle, a BMW M3, went off the road and crashed into a tree, CMPD said. A police incident report said there was also a 22-year-old woman and another man inside the vehicle.

CMPD said all three were wearing seatbelts. Investigators are still determining if speed or impairment factored into the crash, the department said. Alcohol may be a factor, according to the police report.

McKenney’s hometown was Cape Elizabeth, Maine, according to the school’s website. Bluefish Swim Club, in Maine, also posted about McKenney’s death on social media.

“Keegan was part of the swim community and will be remembered by teammates, coaches, and everyone whose lives he touched,” the post said.
