Five I-77 interchanges in Mecklenburg, Iredell counties to see work through 2027
Five Interstate 77 interchanges in north Mecklenburg and south Iredell counties will soon see improvements through a $5.2 million project.
The N.C. Department of Transportation says that the project will improve entrance and exit ramps in the Charlotte area. South Carolina contractor King Asphalt, Inc. has been awarded the contract that includes grading, paving and drainage work at these exits:
- Sunset Road (Exit 16)
- Harris Boulevard (Exit 18)
- N.C. 73 (Exit 25)
- Griffith Street (Exit 30)
- Williamson Road (Exit 33)
All necessary ramp and lane closures will take place at night between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. due to I-77 being a heavily traveled thoroughfare, NCDOT said. Other closures will be in place for holidays or special events that generate heavy traffic flow.
NCDOT said the one exception is the Sunset Road interchange. Contract crews will work solely on the entrance ramps to I-77 North and South. These ramps will require more extensive repairs, NCDOT said, so the contract will include a 60-day window calling for continuous work on them. The ramps will not be closed at the same time, but repairs must be completed to both within the given time frame.
Work is expected to start as early as the end of June and will be complete in the spring of 2027, according to NCDOT.
