Fire in East Charlotte destroys eight apartments, forces people out
The Charlotte Fire Department responded to a blaze at 3:20 a.m. Thursday at Delta Crossing Apartments.
The aggressive fire quickly engulfed much of an apartment building, leaving firefighters to call for assistance from another engine to assist in the fire and conduct searches throughout the apartment.
The fire, according to officials, originally began outside the apartments at a common entryway, and left one of the few ways to exit blocked off due to the intensity.
Firefighters rescued two residents and a pet, and got the fire under control in around 51 minutes. Both residents were transported to the hospital for evaluation, according to a Charlotte Fire press release.
No firefighters were injured.
The American Red Cross is helping individuals displaced.
After the blaze was finished burning and the scene was cleared, Charlotte Fire Department began inspections on the building to examine the extent of damages, with a broken pipe also constantly shooting out water in the morning.
Firefighters and construction crews worked to turn it off, getting the pipe to shut off after multiple attempts to shut down the main-break to the apartment.
Firefighters withdrew their engines from the scene after it was secured, but kept fire officials on scene to continue to investigate the cause.
