Man found in Charlotte gas station parking lot was shot and killed, police say
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers are investigating the shooting death of a man found at the BP gas station near the intersection of East WT Harris and N. Sharon Amity Road on Saturday night.
Police said they responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon at 9:37 p.m. When officers arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound inside a vehicle in the gas station’s parking lot. First responders tried CPR but the man died, according to a statement from CMPD late Saturday.
The victim has been identified as 52-year-old Allen Nugene Smith, police said in a news release Sunday afternoon.
CMPD officials say a homicide investigation is underway. As of Sunday, no arrests had been made.
Smith’s death marks Charlotte’s 57th homicide of the year. The city is keeping pace in 2020 with last year’s homicide rate — the city’s deadliest year in a decade.
Just last week a 52-year-old man was fatally shot on another stretch of East WT Harris, near Albermarle Road, and a suspect has since been charged.
On Friday, police charged a 28-year-old man in another shooting in east Charlotte that happened Thursday in an apartment complex off Independence Boulevard, near Coliseum Drive.
Police encourage anyone with information about Saturday’s fatal shooting to call the department’s tip line at 704-432-TIPS to speak directly to a detective or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
