Shooting on Independence Boulevard leaves teen dead

A teenager died in a shooting at the 6100 block of Independence Boulevard around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found 18-year-old Jarele Martez Blackson with a gunshot wound in a parking lot near the intersection of Wallace Lane and Independence Boulevard, police said. Medic pronounced Blackson dead.

The shooting took place at a storage facility, according to Observer news partner WBTV.

The death is Charlotte’s 72nd homicide of the year. This time last year — which was one of the worst years for murders in a decade — the city had experienced 62 homicides.
