A suspect connected in the fatal shooting of a teenager last month was arrested in Texas on Monday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said.

Noe Raul Chinchilla, 27, is suspected of killing 16-year-old Jeferson Josue Landaverde-Cantareno and injuring an unidentified 18-year-old while the two were inside a vehicle near a south Charlotte apartment complex on June 21, CMPD said in a news release.

Officers found Landaverde-Cantareno wounded when they responded to investigate a call for assault with a deadly weapon call in the 300 block of Branchview Drive, near Arrowood and Nations Ford roads, The Charlotte Observer previously reported. Medic pronounced the teenager dead, police said.

The 18-year-old, who had also been inside the vehicle during the shooting, was found a short distance away with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, police said. He was taken to a hospital for further treatment.

CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team worked with South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the FBI and Austin police to find Chinchilla. He was arrested in Austin and turned over to the custody of the Travis County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, CMPD said.

Chinchilla is awaiting extradition back to Mecklenburg County, police said. It is unclear why Chinchilla was in Texas or what his charges are.

As of Wednesday afternoon, there have been at least 56 homicides this year, according to data compiled by The Charlotte Observer.
