Photos angled up women’s skirts found on ex-Country Day administrator’s devices, report says
Hundreds of inappropriate photos of women — some possibly Charlotte Country Day students at school — were found on the work laptop and work phone of a former Country Day School administrator arrested on felony peeping charges Friday, according to a new police affidavit filed in court.
Scott Waybright, 58, assistant head of academics and a longtime administrator at the private school, was fired and now faces 10 felony counts in Mecklenburg County.
The affidavit said the school took Waybright’s work laptop and phone on Nov. 18 after a teacher sent an email about a student alleging Waybright took photos of her at the school in 2023.
The teacher went to school administrators about the incident in 2023, the affidavit said, and the head of the school at the time searched through Waybright’s phone. But nothing was found.
The teacher said in her Nov. 18 email that she thought the situation wasn’t handled correctly, and that she believed the student, the affidavit said.
Waybright did not respond to a voicemail Saturday requesting comment.
Forensic examination of devices
The school hired a private investigator to examine Waybright’s devices, leading to the images being found, according to the affidavit.
Waybright was given back his laptop and phone afterward, the affidavit said.
The school provided a copy of everything found to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department on Nov. 29. CMPD sexual assault unit detectives found that the photos were taken at the school and public places like grocery stores and swimming pools.
“At least five of the photos” were taken “at an angle to see up the women’s shorts or skirts and the women’s undergarments and or butt cheeks are visible in the photos,” the affidavit said.
Interim Head of School David Mancos sent a message to Charlotte Country Day School families Friday about the arrest, and said Waybright was fired on Dec. 2, and barred from each campus.
After he was fired, the school gave Waybright’s laptop and phone to CMPD, the affidavit said.
Police searched the devices and found videos clipped together, including some called “shorts super g,” which showed a woman being followed as she walked around in shorts at a grocery store. The camera was angled to try to film up her shorts.
The photos found during the private investigation had been deleted from the devices, the affidavit said.
Library incident in 2017
The school also told police that in 2017, a man reported to Country Day that Waybright photographed his wife at the school library.
“School administrators at that time sent Waybright’s phone off to have it reviewed and nothing was found at that time,” the affidavit said.
Waybright is the second employee from Charlotte Country Day arrested on allegations of alleged misconduct in less than a month.
On Nov. 13, policed arrested Matthew Philip Elliott, 39, a former cross country coach and substitute teacher at the school. Police charged Elliott with two felony counts of indecent liberties with a student.
A grand jury has since indicted him on the charges. School officials told police that in 2023 the school also received a report of an inappropriate relationship between Elliott and a different student, according to court records.
In his message to parents, Mancos said Waybright’s case is “in no way related” to Elliott’s.
“I understand that this news is difficult, especially on the heels of other allegations regarding an employee’s misconduct,” Mancos said. “As before, we have and will continue to take swift and decisive action needed to address employee misconduct.”
Waybright remains free under a $50,000 unsecured bond.
Waybright’s attorney, Tony Scheer, could not be reached on Monday.
Shannon Drosky, the school’s director of marketing and communications, declined to comment on Monday, citing the ongoing law enforcement investigation.
