12-year-old dies after Monroe neighborhood shootout, police say. ‘It was pretty chaotic’
A 12-year-old who was shot during what Monroe police called a “large street fight” on Saturday later died on Monday.
Police said they arrested a 17-year-old suspect.
The fight was planned between two groups Saturday evening, police Lt. Morgan Malone said. The groups “just have some kind of ongoing dispute. Sort of like family feuds.”
Officers responded to the shooting near the 600 block of Skywatch Lane around 6:28 p.m., a department press release said. A redacted police report said the incident was not gang-related and occurred at one of the victims’ homes.
“It was pretty chaotic. There were a lot of people,” Malone said. “Somewhere in this fight, people started shooting, so the 12-year-old got hit.”
While at the scene, Malone said, the officers learned a 15-year-old had also been shot, and was taken to the hospital.
The 15-year-old was still in the hospital on Monday, but is expected to recover, Malone said.
Only one group appeared to live in the neighborhood, she said, and were drawn out for the fight after the other group pulled up outside of their home. There were multiple shooters, Malone said.
The 17-year-old will be charged as a juvenile with first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, and discharging a firearm into occupied property, according to police.
There is no information about what kind of guns were used, Malone said.
While she understands neighbors were concerned about safety after the fight, she said the incident was isolated to the two fighting groups.
“I do think it’s very targeted to these two groups of people,” Malone said. “If anybody in the neighborhood does see anything, seconds really matter in situations like this and they need to call 911 immediately.”
Police asked anyone with information about the shooting to call them at 704-282-4700.
