Arrests made in fatal shooting of Charlotte-area high school student, police say

Two teenagers have been arrested in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old student Cayden Morgan Casanova, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said Friday.

Cayden was shot in a car during a robbery attempt in the 8700 block of Hollow Creek Circle just after 4 p.m. Jan. 18, according to a CMPD news release. Medic pronounced him dead at the scene, police said.

Police obtained warrants charging the underage suspects with murder, attempted robbery, shooting into an occupied vehicle and felony conspiracy.

On Thursday, CMPD officers, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents and Lee County, South Carolina, sheriff’s investigators arrested the teens in Lee County, CMPD said.

The teens awaited extradition to Charlotte on Friday.

Cayden, whom everyone called “Baby Nova,” was a junior football and baseball player at Hickory Ridge High School in Harrisburg, according to his obituary.
