A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer was injured in a head-on collision after a driver fled from another officer trying to make a traffic stop in east Charlotte early Wednesday morning.

The driver sped off as a CMPD officer attempted to pull the vehicle over at 1:54 a.m. near Winterfield Place for displaying a fake license plate tag, a press release said.

The driver then crashed head-on into another CMPD vehicle in the area, CMPD said. The officer inside the vehicle was treated and has been released from a hospital.

The driver was taken into custody, CMPD said. The department did not identify the driver or the injured officer.
