A Park Road strip mall descended into chaos at 4 a.m. Sunday, June 8, when shots erupted during an illegal stunt driving event, according to the Pineville Police Department.

One person was hit and remained hospitalized Sunday, police said in a news release.

The event amounted to an illegal street takeover, but was centered in the parking lot of the Park 51 Shops across from Atrium Health Pineville, police said.

Witnesses reported drivers were seen performing “burnouts and donuts in the parking lot,” police said.

“Officers were dispatched to the area ... following multiple 911 calls reporting a large crowd, vehicles obstructing traffic, and possible shots fired,” police said.

“Units located evidence of a large gathering and learned that a physical altercation had broken out between several individuals during the event. During the fight, a suspect retrieved a firearm and discharged multiple rounds. At least one round traveled into a vehicle, another striking a victim in the leg.”

The person was taken to Atrium Health “with non-life-threatening injuries and remains in stable condition,” police said.

One arrest was made in connection with a fight at the scene, but no suspect has been identified in connection with the gunfire, police said.

Detectives are seeking the public’s help in finding video footage, photographs, or other information regarding the event. Tips can be offered to Pineville police at 704-889-2231 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers 704-889-TIPS, police said.
