A person in Wingate is in the hospital after a Union County deputy sheriff shot him while responding to a domestic disturbance involving a weapon call Tuesday morning.

Two people were in a home on Canary Court when deputies arrived and fired at the individuals, shooting one of them, according to a sheriff’s office news release on Facebook.

The injured person was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. No deputies were injured, the news release said.

The news release did not contain details about what led to the deputy firing their weapon or how many times the gun was fired. It also did not say how many deputies responded to the scene or which deputies fired their gun.

Union County Sheriff Eddie Cathy requested the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation conduct an investigation into the case. It is standard procedure for the SBI to investigate shootings involving law enforcement.
