Man who died in Mecklenburg jail has no known family, sheriff says
A 62-year-old man who was found dead in the Mecklenburg jail on Sunday morning had no known family, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said.
Jail employees found him around 5:35 a.m. while doing morning checks, according to a statement from Bradley Smith, a spokesperson for the office. He had been arrested in June and was unhoused, so “we have no next of kin to notify,” Smith’s email said.
The sheriff’s office did not release the man’s name or what charges he faced.
The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation will investigate the death.
A 38-year-old man was found dead in the jail in early August.
