Search for source of gunfire leads to 1 dead, another critically hurt, CMPD says
Shots fired before dawn in a Charlotte industrial district killed one person and critically injured another, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.
They were discovered around 2:45 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, in the 200 block of Atando Avenue, which is just off North Tryon Street.
“One victim was pronounced deceased on scene by MEDIC. The other victim was transported to the hospital by MEDIC with life threatening injuries,” CMPD said.
Details of a suspect have not been released. Police later identified the man killed as Jan Keneth Meza Figueroa, 18.
Sunday morning, a bloody white blanket remained on the road at the scene. Two vehicles — a BMW with dealer tags and a Ford Mustang — both had bullet holes in them.
The area where the shooting occurred includes vehicle service, recycling, trucking companies, junkyards and a strip club.
Detectives say the incident was one of two killings reported early Sunday.
At 1:15 a.m., officers responded to the 4000 block of Queen City Drive and “discovered a victim with an apparent gunshot wound.” The person was pronounced dead at a hospital, officials said.
Police later identified the victim as Rogerick Llevon Currie, 35.
“Currently, there are no individuals being pursued in connection with this case,” CMPD said.
Queen City Drive parallels Interstate 85 in west Charlotte.
