A doctor told the family of a 16-year-old boy who was shot in the face at a sleepover in northwest Charlotte on Sunday that the teen will not survive his injuries, a GoFundMe page said.

The boy was identified as Jeremiah Gonzalez on the page, which his family started to help with funeral costs. It raised a little over half of a its $16,000 goal as of Wednesday morning.

“On the night of September 21st, 16-year-old Jeremiah Gonzalez was doing what any teenager should be able to do — spending time at a sleepover, playing video games with friends,” the GoFundMe page said. “Jeremiah was a bright, kind, and loving young man with his whole future ahead of him.”

Yosue Ramos, 20, was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill and possession of a stolen firearm, according to court records.

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police affidavit said police responded at 3:41 a.m. and found Gonzalez with a gunshot wound to his right temple and right upper arm.

The affidavit said police interviewed a 17-year-old boy at the home who said he was in his bedroom with Gonzalez, as well as his 21-year-old brother and Ramos. Gonzalez and the 17-year-old were lying in his bed while the 21-year-old brother played videogames, the affidavit said.

Ramos brought two guns with him to the house, a Smith & Wesson and an AR pistol. Ramos picked up the Smith & Wesson from a dresser, pointed it at Gonzalez, and shot him, the 17-year-old witness told police, according to the affidavit. The 17-year-old said Ramos would frequently point unloaded guns at the boys and pull the trigger. The 21-year-old tried to aid to Gonzalez.

The 17-year-old called police while Ramos left with his AR pistol in a red Chevrolet SUV.

Police found the Smith & Wesson on the bed near Gonzalez and determined it was stolen by searching its serial number, the affidavit said.

Court records show Ramos was charged with carrying a concealed weapon in July 2024. That charge is still pending.

Ramos is currently being held at Mecklenburg County jail on a $100,000 secured bond.
