A driver involved in single-vehicle crash on Remount Road jumped and ran before police arrived, leaving behind one dead passenger and another critically injured, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

The driver remains unidentified and CMPD is hoping the public can help in making an arrest.

The crash happened just before 4:15 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, when a Kia Rio hit a utility pole in the 1200 block of Remount Road, police said in a Nov. 10 news release.

“When officers arrived on scene, they located a male and female occupant inside the vehicle, both unresponsive,” CMPD said. “The male was removed from the vehicle and transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The female was pronounced deceased on scene by MEDIC.”

Investigators say the driver and possibly another passenger “fled the scene of the collision on foot.”

“Speed and reckless driving appear to be contributing factors for this collision,” CMPD said.

“Any witnesses to the crash, or anyone with information concerning the crash, should contact Detective K. Sessoms at 704-432-2169 ext. 3. The public can also leave information anonymously by calling Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.”

The crash happened near the Irwin Park Greenway, just west of Interstate 77.
