CMPD seizes over a dozen guns, makes arrests in new uptown safety operation
Police arrested over a dozen people and seized firearms in uptown over the weekend during the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s launch of its new “Operation Safe Season.”
CMPD said its multi-agency operation led to the arrest of 18 people, the seizure of 14 guns, 121 citations, and 216 traffic stops. Officers also conducted 16 North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control inspections, issuing four warnings and multiple violations, CMPD said.
“Highlights: Officers removed a violent gang member with multiple felonies from the community, improved roadway safety and received countless ‘thank you’s’ from residents and visitors,” CMPD said in a post on X.
The new initiative, announced by Chief Estella Patterson on Thursday, is a collaboration between CMPD and other local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. It launched Friday evening and is focused on reducing crime and the perception of crime in uptown Charlotte.
While crime fell 9% in Charlotte overall compared to last year between January and November of this year, aggravated assaults were up by 15% this year in the department’s Central Division, which includes uptown. There have also been 10 homicides in the division, which is up from four last year.
In a CMPD post on social media, four guns were shown in boxes next to multiple loaded magazines and baggies of weed.
