A motorist shot on Interstate 85 was likely targeted in a case of road rage taken to extremes, according to investigators in North Carolina.

It happened on Feb. 15 in Salisbury, but the accused shooter was not arrested until Sunday, officials say.

“The Salisbury Police Department responded to a reported road rage shooting on I-85 between E. Innes Street and Jake Alexander Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers located one individual suffering from a gunshot wound,” Salisbury police said in a Feb. 23 news release.

“Patrol officers immediately rendered life-saving aid until EMS arrived. The victim sustained serious injuries, but is expected to recover.”

Court documents report he was traveling in a Nissan Sentra when someone fired shots into the vehicle with a .45 handgun, police said.

An investigation led detectives to identify 29-year-old Darrion Ravon Black of Kannapolis as a suspect, officials said.

Details of what started the dispute were not released.

Black was arrested Feb. 22 and is charged with: assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill/inflicting serious injury; two counts of discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle, and one misdemeanor count of discharging a firearm within city limits, police said. He is being held without bond.

Salisbury is about a 45-mile drive northeast from uptown Charlotte.
