CMPD says woman killed in hit-and-run crash wasn’t wearing a seatbelt

A 23-year-old woman was killed in a hit-and-run collision that also injured two people Tuesday night, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said in a news release.

Sophie Klippel was ejected from a vehicle that collided with another in the 1400 block of The Plaza at 10:12 p.m. near the intersection of Hamorton Place, CMPD said. She was not wearing a seatbelt, police said.

Klippel was passenger in a Kia Soul with two others — a 21-year-old and 62-year-old — who were injured and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The 21-year-old was the driver of the Kia and was not impaired, CMPD said.

A Honda Odyssey that collided with the Kia was abandoned at the scene. The driver of that vehicle ran away from the crash, police said. The Honda Odyssey ran a stop sign and police determined speed to be a factor in the crash.

CMPD had not charged anyone as of Wednesday morning.
