A 24-year-old man was charged Tuesday with the first-degree murder and rape of a 19-year-old woman in east Charlotte on Friday, according to a police news release.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police arrested Thomaz Kenon Hamilton on Tuesday in connection to the homicide that occurred in the 6600 block of Yateswood Drive on May 1, the news release said.

Police identified the woman as Isabella Mary Alexandria Stroupe, who was found deceased when officers responded to a call about an unresponsive woman.

A CMPD incident report said she was found inside an apartment. Neither the police nor the incident report say how Stroupe died, but said her injury type was “other major injuries.” Her home address is listed in Shelby.

Hamilton was interviewed by detectives and taken into custody Tuesday afterward, the department said. He is being held on no bond at Mecklenburg County Jail, according to records.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Note: This story previously contained an incorrect spelling of Stroupe’s middle provided by CMPD and was updated with a spelling provided by her family.
