Charlotte man arrested after shooting at motorist and trying to steal another’s car at gunpoint, records allege
A man is in custody after shooting at a motorist and threatening at gunpoint to steal another person’s car on Saturday afternoon, according to court records filed in Mecklenburg County.
Jarod Lewis Starks, 37, shot at another man in a 2015 Nissan Rogue who drove off after Starks tried taking the vehicle at gunpoint in the 2300 block of North Tryon Street, court records said.
The driver told police Starks fired one round at his vehicle, court records said.
Shortly after, Starks fired at another man driving a Chrysler Sebring near the same location, hitting the left rear tire. He is accused of also trying to kill a woman, according to arrest warrants.
The driver of the Sebring called 911, court records said.
The incident happened shortly before 5 p.m., according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. Police said the motorist who was shot at then flagged down a CMPD officer and pointed out Starks out. Starks approached with his arms folded and revealed the firearm when confronted by the officer, according to court records.
“As the officer gave verbal commands to the suspect, the suspect unfolded his arms revealing a firearm and pointed it at the officer,” court records said. “The officer discharged his firearm towards the suspect which caused him to then flee.”
Starks fled into a nearby business, according to court records and a police news release. He was arrested after a standoff with police.
He was charged with seven felonies and a misdemeanor, including four counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
He was being held without bond after a first appearance in court on Monday.
One charge, possession of a weapon by a felon, followed a conviction in Mecklenburg in August 2020 on a 2018 charge of conspiracy to commit robbery, according to records. Starks was sentenced to minimum of just over seven years, according to an arrest warrant.
