Police are investigating a firearm that was found Thursday at West Mecklenburg High School, according to officials with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

Body scanners detected the weapon, which did not have any live rounds/ammunition, according to Eddie Perez, a media relations specialist at CMS. Law enforcement arrived on campus and an investigation is ongoing.

“All students and staff are safe, and there has been no disruption to the instructional day,” Perez said. “Communication has gone out to parents and families regarding today’s incident.”

It’s the second firearm found on a CMS campus this year after the district set a new record during the 2021-22 year for guns found at schools. A firearm was found on the Julius L. Chambers High School campus in October.

During the first four months of the 2021-22 school year, 23 guns were found on campuses across CMS, breaking the previous high of guns found on school grounds during the entirety of 2018-19 school year when the total reached 22.

Since January 2022, seven guns have been found. All but one of the guns reported in schools were seized without the trigger being pulled.
