In the first few months of the 2021-22 school year, CMS has set a concerning new record for guns being brought to campuses.

The majority of the 30 firearms discovered since the start of the school year in late August have been in possession of Charlotte-Mecklenburg high school students, district data show.
During the first four months of the school year, 24 guns were found on the campuses of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The previous high was 22 during the 2018-19 school year.
In the first two weeks of December alone, six guns were found — including one fired at West Charlotte High— on CMS property.
The Charlotte Observer obtained data from CMS showing where guns were confiscated since the start of the school year. The prevalence of weapons has led to widespread calls for action and district officials promising to make swift changes to improve security for teachers, staff and students.
