Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, other area districts cancel Wednesday classes due to snow

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and other area school districts canceled classes Wednesday because of snow on Tuesday and frigid overnight temperatures.

Temperatures were forecast to dip into the teens Tuesday night, with snow after 5 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Areas to the southeast were projected to see higher snow totals than Charlotte. Wednesday will be cold, too, with temperatures in Charlotte not forecast to rise above freezing.

CMS made its announcement after 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

“An update will be provided on when classes will resume,” CMS said in its announcement.

Other Charlotte-area school closures

Here are other schedule changes across the region:

Cabarrus County Schools announced school will be remote Wednesday.

Chester County School District announced after-school activities would be canceled Tuesday, and the start of school will be delayed by two hours Wednesday.

Clover School District announced all offices and schools will be closed Wednesday.

Fort Mill School District will be closed Wednesday. Instructions on how to make-up the missed instructional time will be shared at a later date, according to the district’s website.

Gaston County Schools announced its campuses will be closed for students and staff Wednesday.

Kannapolis City Schools will be closed Wednesday because of snow and freezing temperatures.

Lancaster County School District announced Wednesday will be an e-learning day. All district facilities will be closed Wednesday.

Rock Hill School District announced Wednesday will be an eLearning day, and all facilities will be closed, including for extracurriculars.

Rowan-Salisbury Schools will be closed for students on Wednesday.

“Many roads throughout the county have been blanketed with snow this evening, which will likely freeze overnight,” the district said in its announcement.

Union County Public Schools announced school will be canceled Wednesday and a make-up day will not be needed. The district will provide an update on Thursday’s schedule on Wednesday evening.

York School District announced school is canceled Wednesday.

“To make up this day, students will participate in asynchronous eLearning on Monday, Feb. 3, 2025,” the district announced on its website. “Students have up to five days from Monday, Feb. 3, to complete their work in order to be counted present for the missed day of school. “
