CMS, other school districts announce delays, closures with snow, freezing temps forecast
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will be on a two-hour delay Thursday due freezing temperatures, the district said.
A storm on dusted Charlotte and Mecklenburg County with snow Wednesday afternoon, with higher totals north and east of the city. The National Weather Service says there’s also a chance of snow Thursday morning. Temperatures will drop into the 20s overnight before rising to 37 degrees on Thursday.
“Out of an abundance of caution, all schools will operate on a two-hour delay. Buses will pick up two hours later than their regular schedule. Before School will also operate on a two hour delay,” the district announced on its website Wednesday afternoon. “We will continue to monitor conditions and communicate any additional updates as needed.”
The delay means a school with a 7:30 a.m. bell time starts at 9:30 a.m., for example, and those with an 8 a.m. start time will move to 10 a.m.
All other activities, including CMS’ After School Enrichment Program, will operate on a usual schedule.
Other Charlotte-area school closures
Here are other schedule changes across the region:
▪ Catawba County Schools will have a two-hour delay on Thursday because of “below-freezing temperatures and the possibility of black ice and snowfall during the morning commute,” the district said in an announcement on its website.
▪ Cabarrus County Schools will operate on a two-hour delay Thursday. But the district said it may close entirely if necessary.
▪ Chester County School District campuses are closed for students Feb. 18-21 for the district’s previously scheduled spring intersession.
▪ Clover School District campuses are closed Feb. 17-21 for the district’s previously scheduled winter intersession.
▪ Fort Mill School District announced all facilities will be closed Thursday, and schools will have an e-learning day. All sports and after-school activities are canceled.
▪ Gaston County Schools will have a remote learning day Feb. 20. “It will be asynchronous learning for students, which means they should work on assignments at home that have been provided to them by their teachers,” officials said.
▪ Hickory City Schools will operate on a two-hour delay Thursday.
“With below-freezing temperatures, moisture on roadways and potential precipitation overnight, we want to ensure the safety of our teen drivers, bus drivers and riders and employees commuting from outside Hickory.
▪ Iredell-Statesville Schools announced early Thursday the district is moving to a Remote Learning Day Feb. 20. Employees will work with their supervisor to determine if remote work is an option.
▪ Kannapolis City Schools announced school will be canceled for students Thursday.
▪ Lancaster County School District will operate on a two-hour delay Thursday. “We are continuing to monitor the weather, and we will provide updated alerts if there are any changes,” the district announced on its website.
▪ Lincoln County Schools will operate on a two-hour delay Thursday.
▪ Mooresville Graded School District will have remote learning on Thursday.
“Several forecasts show below freezing overnight temperatures, as well as snowfall between 6:00 am and 9:00 am on Thursday, causing potentially dangerous conditions during morning commutes,” the district said on its website. “We realize there are no guarantees with the weather; however, we decided to make the call tonight in an effort to give our families time to prepare.”
▪ Rock Hill School District will have an e-learning day Thursday. “All district and school facilities will be closed on Thursday, Feb. 20, including all after school activities and practices,” the district announced.
▪ Union County Public Schools will have a remote learning day for students. All district facilities are closed and all athletic and after-school events are canceled, the district announced.
▪ York School District will be closed Thursday because of expected snow and temperatures below freezing into the afternoon.
