Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will have a remote learning day Wednesday as the county continues to recover from winter weather hitting the area Saturday and Sunday. Other districts will do the same or delay the start of school by two hours.

A winter storm brought a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain that started Saturday evening and continued Sunday, coating roadways and sidewalks. Temperatures have teeter-tottered since, often remaining below freezing and expected to continue to do so into next week.

“All CMS buildings will remain closed for students to allow our teams time to prepare schools and ensure safety,” a district spokesperson said in a statement Tuesday afternoon. “This includes clearing ice and debris from school campuses, checking bus routes and secondary roadways, and confirming that schools are ready for reopening.”

The district was closed entirely on Monday and had a remote learning day on Tuesday. Remote learning on Wednesday will be asynchronous, meaning students will complete assignments on their own at home, without live virtual instruction. Assignments will be due the next scheduled school day.

Before and after-school programs are also canceled for the day.
