Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will start on a two-hour delay Thursday

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will return to in-person classes Thursday, but on a two-hour delay, as the county continues to recover from winter weather hitting the area Saturday and Sunday.

A winter storm brought a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain that started Saturday evening and continued Sunday, coating roadways and sidewalks. Temperatures have remained cold since, and there’s an additional threat of winter precipitation this weekend.

“School start times and bus pickups will begin two hours later than usual. All before‑school programs (BSEP) will also operate on a two-hour delay,” a CMS spokesperson said in a statement Wednesday afternoon. “After‑school programs (ASEP), athletic events, and Community Use of Schools activities will operate on a normal schedule.”

School was canceled on Monday, and CMS conducted remote learning days on Tuesday and Wednesday.

This weekend, the Charlotte area is projected to see highs in the 30s with lows in the teens, with a high chance of snow Friday and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

Here’s how other districts in the region are planning for class Thursday.

  • Cabarrus County Schools: The district announced it will operate on a two-hour delay Thursday.
  • Catawba County Schools: The district will have a remote instruction day on Thursday. “Based on guidance from NCDOT, there is a strong possibility remote learning may continue through the end of the week as secondary roads remain unsafe,” the district said via its website Tuesday afternoon.
  • Gaston County Schools: The district announced it will operate on a two-hour delay Thursday.
  • Hickory City Schools: The district will have a remote learning day on Thursday.
  • Mooresville Graded School District: The district announced it will operate on a two-hour delay Thursday. Extracurriculars before school are canceled.
