A Charlotte brunch restaurant received a “B” grade from the Mecklenburg County Health Department for numerous health violations, including the presence of insects and food buildup on kitchen surfaces.

Velvet Taco, 2170 Hawkins St., in South End, received a score of 88.5 during its June 12 inspection.

Health department inspectors cited the restaurant after finding “small flies near the soda machine and large flies in rear prep areas,” documents show. The restaurant was also written up when inspectors noticed “food residue and buildup inside reach-in coolers and surrounding cooler drawers.”

Other violations the restaurant was cited for include:

  • Medications stored on shelves above prep unit

  • Tomatoes, cheese and lettuce stored above required temperatures

  • Brisket and pork stored below required temperatures

  • Wet stacked plastic and stainless steel pans

  • Unlabeled food containers

This is the restaurant’s first “B” grade.

According to state law, permits are immediately revoked if a restaurant receives a score of less than 70 percent.

The Charlotte Observer contacted the restaurant for comment regarding its score prior to publication.
