Who is responsible for repairing damaged sidewalks in Charlotte? Here’s what to know
Charlotte has more than 130 miles of sidewalks to keep pedestrians safe while walking along busy streets.
While sidewalks are useful in growing cities like Charlotte, hazards, such as cracks or holes, could heighten the risk of injuries for pedestrians. And you could be held liable if a pedestrian is injured on your property.
The best thing to do if you notice a damaged sidewalk on your property is to have it repaired.
Here’s who is responsible for repairing damaged sidewalks in Charlotte, and how to submit a service request for a repair.
Who is responsible for repairing sidewalks in Charlotte?
The Charlotte Department of Transportation is responsible for repairing damaged sidewalks, according to the department’s website.
“CDOT handles this responsibility year-round,” the department’s website says. “CDOT’s Street Maintenance Division is committed to ensuring Charlotte streets, drainage structures and sidewalks are in safe condition.”
All repairs, including fixes to driveway pads, are done at the city’s expense, according to CDOT. The department will repair sidewalks with, but it will not repair driveway pads at those properties.
CDOT may patch a sidewalk with asphalt temporarily “to make it safe and protect both the city and the adjacent property owner from any associated liability,” then replace the asphalt with concrete at a later date, the department’s website says.
