After fire gutted popular Lake Norman nightspot, Tropicana has new place, opening date
Tropicana, the longtime Cornelius nightspot that closed due to a fire, plans a May 1 grand opening in a new location, owner Cambridge Hospitality Group announced on Facebook on Monday.
Known for its authentic Mexican cuisine, late-night entertainment and drinks paired with food, Tropicana will open in the former Kat’s Seafood Kitchen, 19708 W. Catawba Ave., its owner said.
A fire in June 2022 gutted Tropicana’s former longtime perch on West Catawba.
“Most of the fire was found in the rear patio area,” Cornelius-Lemley Fire Rescue reported on Facebook at the time. “All companies made quick work to keep the fire from extending into the businesses.”
Now, Tropicana is ready for a new chapter.
“Tropicana will be a place to enjoy good drinks, live music, and late night entertainment,” according to the announcement.
Tacos and other street-style dishes highlight the menu. The bar also will offer “a carefully curated selection of cocktails, beers and other beverages to pair with the food,” its owner said on Facebook.

Mooresville developer plans 98 cottage homes
A Mooresville developer plans to build 98 cottage homes with a dog park, 10-foot-wide multi-use trail and other amenities off Oakridge Farm Highway (N.C. 150 East).
The Mooresville Planning Board voted unanimously Tuesday night to recommend Nest Communities LLC’s rezoning and annexation requests to the Mooresville Board of Commissioners, which has final say.
“This looks like a great project,” Planning Board member Jeremy Katz said in making the motion to recommend approval of the subdivision to the Board of Commissioners.
Cottages at Back Creek would cover nearly 32 mostly wooded acres in the 100 block of Pepaw Drive owned by local resident Jane Mills, according to Mooresville Planning Department documents.
The development would sprout east of N.C. 801 and just west of Back Creek and the Cherry Grove and Beverly Park subdivisions. The site is about 1 1/2 miles west of the 1902 Carrigan Farms home site and working farm.
Cottages at Back Creek also would include an outdoor covered community gathering area, a community garden, an open activity lawn, grilling station, outdoor fire pit and seating areas, according to the documents.
Homes would be a maximum of 1,100 square feet and two stories, according to the developer. Each home would have a private 3-foot-wide bed of perennial plants and a covered porch, the developer said.
Three architectural designs will be offered, and all homes will face open green space in the community. The development will have many sidewalk connections, according to the plans.
“We’re one of the first with this,” Adam Hayes of Nest Communities told the Planning Board of what he called the high-quality cottage-style homes. “We’re setting a precedent.”
The community will have a less-intense density of homes and plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities, including through its proposed greenway, he added.
Before building begins, Nest Communities would pay $5,000 for a bus stop in the public right-of-way of N.C. 150.
And a turn lane would be built to ease congestion on already backed-up N.C 150.
