A son’s decision to listen to his mom when it came to lottery tickets paid off big, Maryland officials said.

The Eastern Shore resident doesn’t play the lottery often, but his mom is an avid scratcher, according to a Sept. 6 news release by the Maryland Lottery.

He had no clue letting his mom choose his ticket would land him a $100,000 prize, officials said.

The two went to a Cambridge convenience store, and his mom picked out the $10 Money Rush game, officials said. He then scratched just the prize area of the ticket.

When the man gave it to the store employee to check, the scanner revealed the prize that left the duo in “shock,” officials said.

“I looked at it and I was like, to my mom, ‘We gotta go,’” the winner told officials.

When the lucky man got home, he scratched the rest of the ticket and revealed the winning numbers, officials said.

“It still doesn’t feel real,” he said.

The man plans to give some of the money to his mom, while most of the winnings will go into savings, officials said.

This win means there are six $100,000 top prizes left to be claimed, the release said.

Cambridge is about an 80-mile drive southeast of Baltimore.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
