What started out as a scary situation turned into a safe ending after a dog in Indiana got a bone stuck around his jaw.

The owners of Enzo, an Australian shepherd, took him to the Bloomington Fire Department on Tuesday, Sept. 17, after the round bone got stuck around his bottom jaw, according to a Facebook post from the fire department.

From there, firefighters took Enzo to an emergency vet clinic, where he was sedated and a Dremel was used to remove the bone.

“We are so happy Enzo is safe and things worked out so well for him,” firefighters said. “Awesome ending.”

It’s important to practice safety when giving a dog a bone, as they can be dangerous for multiple reasons, according to VCA Animal Hospitals. They can lead to broken teeth, mouth injuries and can cause choking.

“Please use extreme caution when giving your dog bones to chew on. Not only can they become choking hazards but, like in Enzo’s incident, they can get stuck around their jaws, too,” firefighters said.
