Distracted by a Florida welcome sign, a New York driver slowed to a dangerous speed and caused a car wreck that killed four children, authorities said.

Over a year later, he’s charged.

Marvin Funes was extradited from New York and booked into the Nassau County Jail Nov. 2 on four counts of culpable negligence and several other criminal and civil charges following a car crash in 2023, the Jacksonville Florida Highway Patrol said in a Nov. 20 statement on X, formerly known as Twitter.

According to an arrest report, Funes slowed his vehicle to “one to two miles per hour” on an interstate so a passenger could take a photo of the “Welcome to Florida” sign, WJAX-TV reported.

Then, another car rear-ended Funes’ vehicle, killing four children riding in the back seat of his car, WTLV-WJXX reported. Three adults had non-fatal injuries, FHP told the outlet.

The children, all between the ages of 10 and 14, were on their way to Miami, according to a GoFundMe page.

“A picture is never worth a human life,” FHP said in the statement.
