A tragic case of animal abuse hasn’t slowed down a happy dog in a Kansas shelter. All he needs now is a special home that can accommodate his needs.

“Coffee Bean started life as a normal puppy... until abuse left him partially paralyzed. He came to us at only 5 months old, having endured a tragic start,” the Great Plains Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (SPCA) in Merriam said in an April 22 Facebook post.

“He suffered severe spinal trauma at the hands of his owner, resulting in partial paralysis of his hind legs and incontinence. That owner has since been found guilty of animal cruelty.”

Thankfully, the abuse didn’t steal Coffee Bean’s zest for life and love of people.

“Despite facing such tragedy, Coffee Bean hasn’t stopped loving life. He’s amazing with kids of all ages, loves big dogs, and is a total cuddlebug. He plays, goes on car rides, and loves toys,” the shelter said.

“He wears a diaper indoors and does need some extra care, but he’s worth it. He has been undergoing physical therapy, and while he may never regain the ability to walk, he has adapted well. With the help of a custom doggie wheelchair, he is able to move with more confidence.”

His distinctive situation means the pup needs a special home with a patient and loving family that would fulfill his needs.

“Coffee Bean is searching for his perfect home. A shelter is not the place for a dog with his unique needs,” the shelter says.

Merriam is in the Kansas City, Missouri, metropolitan area.
