Mecklenburg commissioner Ella Scarborough is in hospice care, board chair says
Mecklenburg County commissioner Ella Scarborough, a longtime fixture in Mecklenburg politics and government, is in hospice care, the board chairman George Dunlap said Tuesday.
The story was first reported by Queen City News.
The news comes less than a month after the county commissioners voted to move forward in appointing an interim replacement for her seat on the board.
Scarborough and her family have not disclosed her current condition. Dunlap said Wednesday that he has not talked with her family.
During her medical leave, Scarborough will receive the full salary and medical benefits of a county commissioner. The list of applicants who could serve as her interim replacement is scheduled to be made public Wednesday.
Once a final applicant is selected and approved by the board, that individual could be sworn in as soon as March 22.
Scarborough became the first Black woman elected to serve on the Charlotte City Council in 1987. She previously ran for Charlotte Mayor and for U.S. Senate, and has served as a county commissioner since 2014.
