Funeral for Ella Scarborough set in Charlotte. Here’s where and when to pay respects.

A funeral service for longtime Mecklenburg County Commissioner Ella Scarborough will be held Wednesday afternoon.

Services will be held at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 3400 Beatties Ford Road, beginning with visitation at noon followed by the funeral at 1 p.m. Scarborough was a member of Friendship Missionary, according to her obituary.

Her death was announced Tuesday by her family. She was 75.

Hailed as a barrier-breaking politician and community figure, Scarborough was elected to the Charlotte City Council in 1987, becoming the first Black woman to hold that position. She won a county commission seat in 2014. Scarborough also was the first Black woman to run for Charlotte mayor and the U.S. Senate in North Carolina.

There has been an outpouring of praise and grief by local officials since her death, who lauded her as a dedicated public servant.

She is survived by her two children, Troy and Tori; her siblings, Floydetta and Norman, and many nieces and nephews.

Condolences may be mailed to P.O. Box 323022, Charlotte, NC 28232.
